What is White distilled vinegar?

White distilled vinegar is distilled from grain alcohol. This vinegar is not typically used for cooking but is great for cleaning windows as well as other household tasks. This should not be confused with white wine vinegar.

Culinary Uses

White distilled vinegar is used in many pickling recipes. It is also used in Thai and Vietnamese cooking.

Substitute For Distilled White Vinegar

If you don't have white distilled vinegar you can alternatively substitute:

White wine vinegar can be used in place of distilled in Vietnamese or Thai cooking but not for cleaning.
You could also substitute rice vinegar which is much lower acid
OR - Apple cider vinegar, again, lower in acid and not for cleaning.
